Kyiv International Airport is conducting design work to extend its runway for 150 meters, which is to be completed in 2015.
This was stated by Chairman of the Board of Directors at Kyiv International Airport Denys Kostorzhevsky, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“The extension of the runway for 150 meters is a very difficult question, as it requires additional planning. A preliminary design study is now ongoing – experts are examining not only the geometric capabilities of the airfield, but also the angles of descent, etc. This work is extensive, and I think that we will proceed to the respective design not earlier than at the beginning of next year. I expect that this work will most likely be completed in 2015,” Kostorzhevsky said.
At the same time, he noted that the airport is currently not planning to build the second runway. “The second runway is a very controversial issue, because we are fully aware of all the problems and inconveniences that are brought by the airport and the increasing frequency of flights to residents of Kyiv. Now that a great number of planes fly over the city and this number is growing, residents of Kyiv are dissatisfied to some extent, so I think that the issue of the second runway is in the long run if this is possible in general,” Kostorzhevsky said.
