The number of Internet users in Ukraine has tripled, head of the National Commission for the State Regulation of Communications and Informatization Petro Yatsuk told journalists.
In addition, there is an increase in the number of operators and Internet service providers.
Yatsuk stressed that if before the Internet was means of information and entertainment, today it is a tool of earnings. “The volume of sales of goods over the Internet for the period from the second half of 2012 to the first half of 2013 grew by 67%,” he said.
According to the National Commission, 95% of domestic enterprises have access to the Internet. Level of Internet access of medical institutions increased by 14%, schools – by 10% (in general 74% of Ukrainian schools have Internet access).
Yatsuk focused on the fact that in 2013 the percentage of online advertising has grown by 35%.
Meanwhile, the expert said that the coverage level and the number of Internet users in Ukraine vary. Zhytomyr, Kirovohrad, Luhansk, Chernivtsi and Zakarpattia regions show the worst rates. There, coverage level is only 4-5 connections per 100 inhabitants.
Ukraine is 109th in the Internet usage ranking of countries.
In Ukraine the percentage of people with access to the Internet is 33.7. This is stated in the information report “State of Broadband 2013”, prepared by a joint initiative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and UNESCO.
According to the ITU, the country with the highest proportion of Internet users is Iceland (96% of the population). Also, among the leading countries are Norway (95%), Sweden (94%), Denmark (93%) and the Netherlands (93%).
Minimum Internet coverage is in Myanmar (1.1%), East Timor (0.9%), and Eritrea (0.8%).
Among the immediate neighbors of Ukraine – Poland has internet coverage level of 65% (64th place), and Russia ranked 69th with coverage of 53.3%, Georgia – 45.5% (81st place).
