Ukraine’s national football team will take on France in the play-offs of the 2014 World Cup qualifying, according to the draw conducted at FIFA headquarters in Zurich (Switzerland) on the 21st of October.
Ukraine will play the first match at home on November 15, and the return game will be held away on November 19.
Other play-off pairs are Portugal vs. Sweden, Greece vs. Romania, and Iceland vs. Croatia.
In addition to the Europeans, vacant tickets to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil will be played out by representatives of other FIFA confederations: Jordan vs. Uruguay, Mexico vs. New Zealand, Nigeria vs. Ethiopia, Senegal vs. Ivory Coast, Cameroon vs. Tunisia, Egypt vs. Ghana, and Algeria vs. Burkina Faso.
Twenty-one of the 32 teams have already qualified for the World Cup, in particular, Brazil (hosts), Australia, Argentina, Honduras, Iran, Colombia, Costa Rica, the United States, Chile, Ecuador, South Korea, Japan, Belgium, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Russia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, England and current world champions Spain.
The draw for the final stage of the 2014 World Cup will be made on December 6. The tournament will take place in Brazil from June 12 to July 13, 2014.
As reported, four previous attempts to win through to the world and European championships through the play-offs were unsuccessful for Ukraine. In 1997, Ukraine lost to Croatia (0-2, 1-1), in 1999 to Slovenia (1-2, 1-1), in 2001 to Germany (1-1, 1-4), and in 2009 to Greece (0-0, 0-1).
