Ukrainian singer Sofia Tarasova, 12, became the winner of the sixth international competition of young popular music performers New Wave. The winner got 197 points, beating the runner-up from Lithuania Paulina Skrabyte, 12, by one point. Russian performer Diana Khitarova, 9, took the third place in the competition.

Ukrainian performer impressed the jury by her performance on the first day of the New Wave when the participants had to sing a song popular in their own country. Tarasova chose Tina Karol’s hit Namaliuiu (Will Paint [For You]). The judges granted Tarasova 11 points each, except for one judge sticking to a 10. In total, Ukrainian singer got 98 points for her performance.

On the second day of the competition young Tarasova performed Justin Bieber’s 2010 hit Baby, which was bound for success with the audience and did not fail to impress the judges either. They gave the singer 11 points each, adding up 99 points to the total and getting Tarasova her victory.

Sofia Tarasova began her singing journey at the age of 2.5 when she tested to have absolute pitch. She was accepted to the talented kids group at the R. Glier Kyiv Institute of Music.
Notably, on August 2, 2013, Sofia Tarasova won herself a ticket to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2013. The singer participated in the national final among young performers competing for the right to represent Ukraine in the prestigious international competition – the young version of the grand international singing and dancing event, the Eurovision Song Contest.

Tarasova’s song We Are One will compete for the winning spot in the JESC on November 30, 2013. Interestingly, Ukraine is the host of this year’s competition, which will take place at the country’s main concert hall – Palace Ukraine (Palats Ukrayina).

Interestingly, Tarasova was not the only Ukrainian singer to participate in the New Wave 2013. Nazariy Stynianskyi and sextet Shproty took the sixth and seventh spots in the competition, respectively. Each team got the total of 193 points, just like the holder of the fifth place – Latvian representative Katrina Paula Diringa.

New Wave is the annual singing competition, which first took place in 2002. Latvian composer Raimonds Pauls and Russian composer Igor Krutoy initiated the contest. In 2008, the children’s version of the competition was first held in Moscow. Since 2010, the Children’s New Wave is hosted by the southern Ukrainian resort Artek, Crimea.
